Five Sided Circle has arrived! Sporting a sonic minefield of precious gems, colourful stones, marvelous rock formations, boulders whose beauty will stop you in your tracks, and mountains of peaks never heard before, these musicians are equipped with some fine climbing gear. Coming from extremely various backgrounds Five Sided Circle will appear as a quintet for the first time at the Suoni per il Popolo festival. A must-see!!

A duo featuring the hollowed-out sounds of Elizabeth Millar and Craig Pedersen playing amplified trumpet and clarinet, Sound of the Mountain comes from a strong history of improvisation and extended performance techniques, offering their audience long-form deep listening experiences through the sculpting of vitalized breath. They play improvised music and composed material in the form of graphic scores created by the artists. Highlights of their work include concerts across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Singapore, Australia & Malaysia, including 2016 editions of Halifax’s Obey Convention and Pop Montréal, and a week long residency at Concordia University’s Matralab with the elecro-acoustic duo Instant Places. In August 2017 they will head to Japan for a three-month residency before returning to Southeast Asia and Australia to tour.

Five Sided Circle est un collectif d’improvisateurs qui s’intéresse aux rapports et aux tensions entre la composition et l’improvisation. Lori Freedman, Nicolas Caloia et Yves Charuest forment le noyau de base de Five Sided Circle, auquel se greffent différents invités choisis en fonction des projets. Pour cette édition de Suoni per il Popolo, Lori Freedman a invité le percussionniste français Lê Quan Ninh et le trompettiste américain Nate Wooley.
Five Sided Circle is a collective of improvising chamber musicians who are exploring the relationships and tensions between composition and improvisation. Lori Freedman (clarinets), Nicolas Caloia (double bass), Yves Charuest (alto saxophone) form the core of Five Sided Circle and are joined by different guests selected for each specific projects. For this edition of Suoni per il Popolo, Lori Freedman invited French percussionist Lê Quan Ninh and American trumpeter Nate Wooley.
Qualified as “a musical revolutionary in the front ranks of the avant-garde”, Lori Freedman is known internationally for her singular approach. Over fifty composers have written solo music for her and her work has been recorded on over forty CDs. She is omnipresent on Montreal and international stages as a performer and composer, and is well known for her work with several ensembles such as Orkestra Futura, Arraymusic, Transmission, Continuum, Ensemble Supermusique, Paramirabo, Upstream Orchestra, Queen Mab Trio, Henneman Sextet, Lott Dance, Oberlander Films, and Foresite Theatre, as well as her collaborations with Rohan de Saram, Barre Phillips, Helmut Lachenmann, Frances-Marie Uitti, Monique Jean, Joëlle Léandre, Axel Dörner, George Lewis, the Jack Quartet and Richard Barrett.
Nicolas Caloia has worked as a performer, composer, and organizer in Montreal since the early 1990s and has toured in North America, Europe, and Asia with the most important members of Montreal’s creative music community as well as with internationally renowned musicians like Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Joe McPhee, Steve Lacy, Hassan Hakmoun, Tristan Honsinger and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Currently, the majority of his work as a composer and improviser finds a voice in: The Ratchet Orchestra – a 19-piece ensemble, In the Sea – a trio with Tristan Honsinger and Joshua Zubot, and in duos with Lori Freedman, Yves Charuest and Kim Zombik.
Canadian saxophonist Yves Charuest has worked on the jazz and new music scene in the 1980-90s with many Canadian musicians such as Michel Ratté, Jean Beaudet, Lisle Ellis and Jean Derome. He was a member of the Peter Kowald Trio (with Louis Moholo) with whom he played extensively in Europe and the USA (1985-1990). He has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians Roscoe Mitchell, Georg Graewe, Nate Wooley, Agustí Fernández, William Parker, Mike Vlatkovich and Mathias Schubert. Charuest’s current projects include Still (with Nicolas Caloia and Peter Valsamis) and Charuest-Caloia.
For more than 30 years, percussionist Lê Quan Ninh works with contemporary music ensembles and in free improvisation projects. He was a founding member of Quatuor Hêlios and ensemble]h[iatus and toured with numerous improvisers such as Thomas Lehn, Géraldine Keller, Tetsu Saitoh, Carl Ludwig Hubsch, Hans Koch, Isabelle Duthoit and Fred Frith. He shares the artistic direction of Association Ryoanji and a festival called Le Bruit de la Musique, and has collaborated with Daunik Lazro, Michel Doneda, Beñat Achiary, Dominique Regef, Paul Rogers, Frédéric Blondy, Peter Kowald, Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Harald Kimmig, and Tony di Napoli.
Nate Wooley is one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the Brooklyn jazz, improvisation, noise, and new music scenes. He has performed with top-tier musicians and composers, including John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Éliane Radigue, Ken Vandermark, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada, and he has collaborated with some of the best musicians of his generation including Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson. His work has been featured at the SWR JazzNow in Donaueschingen, the WRO Media Arts Biennial in Poland, Konigsberg, North Sea, Music Unlimited, and Copenhagen Jazz Festivals.
